Every September, Appetites on Main honors one of their founders, David Weinstein, and strives to teach the community about pancreatic cancer. This year, the restaurant will host the 3rd Annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday, September 17th from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m at Appetites on Main, 286 Main Street, Exton.
David Weinstein founded Appetite’s Delight in Wayne, the Big Easy Saloon in Paoli and Appetites on Main in Exton with his son Brad Weinstein. This dearly missed member of the restaurant community passed away on September 20, 2008 after a year long battle with pancreatic cancer. Each year since, his family, friends and community members have joined together to honor David’s life with good food and drink.
One of their most popular dishes during the event is inspired by the late founder. The Dave W. is a hot corned beef and pastrami on Jewish rye with spicy mustard, Swiss cheese and tomato. Also among diners’ favorites is the Waffle and Ice Cream, a Belgian waffle topped with a tower of ice cream, chocolate sauce, whipped cream and a cherry. Appetites on Main is also known for their NOLA fries and offers a wide selection of sandwiches, salads, and burgers.
Appetites on Main also carries over 70 beers. Original cocktails will include a special purple event drink (rumored to be made with 3 Olives Purple) and oher special libations will be available throughout the day. Live music will be playing throughout the evening and food is served until 1:30 a.m.
Brad Weinstein, David’s son, says it’s all about raising money for a good cause. “It’s a great way to donate, all you have to do is eat, drink and bring friends. You don’t have to do anything special, you just have to eat and drink like you normally would.” Raising money has never tasted so good!
To create awareness about pancreatic cancer, restaurant staff members will be dressed in purple and educational information will be placed on each table. Raffle tickets will be sold during the day. Prizes will include gift certificates to local businesses and restaurants, an autographed Eagles football by Jeremy Maclin, autographed pictures of Mike Quick and Merrill Reese, autographed Flyers hats by Bernie Parent and Gary Dornhoffer.
All proceeds from the raffle and ten percent of each check will go towards the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN). During the 2nd Annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day, Appetites on Main raised over $3,600 for PanCAN. PanCAN is a national organization that conducts research, patient support, community outreach and advocacy for a cure.
Part of the proceeds also go toward Purplestride Philadelphia, a 5k walk and run on November 5th. This past spring, Appetites on Main held a charity golf outing for PanCAN and will be hosting another event this October.
In case you aren’t able to attend these fantastic events, Appetites on Main has made donating simple with a donation button on their website. For updates on the 3rd Annual Pancreatic Awareness Day and golf outing, visit Appetites on Main’s Facebook page (Appetites on Main).
