McNally’s Schmitter Gets Shout-out in Lucky Peach’s Issue #4

The quarterly food journal from Momofuku’s David Chang, the New York Times Peter Meehan, and the McSweeney’s crew is about to lay down an American Food Issue and guess which city of Brotherly Love is making an appearance? Each issue focuses on a single theme, and explores that theme through essays, art, photography, and recipes to make this food journal one of a kind.

It comes as no surprise that the mention is in regards to a cheesesteak concoction and although Philly does a lot of great things with food, everyone knows the cheesesteak is where it all began. However, you’re not going to hear the usual, greasy cheesesteak vendors getting a shout-out in the 4th issue of Lucky Peach. Instead, in a piece written by Tom Lax, he gives it up for one of the city’s best cheesesteak bastardizations, McNalley’s Tavern’s Schmitter. Have you had it?

Lax decided to write about this particular steak and cheese beauty because it takes the “whole cheesesteak thing” to another level. Lax shares with readers what goes in a Schmitter, how it’s prepared, where it gets its name from and how the once obscure sandwich made its way into both Citizens Bank Park and Lincoln Financial Field.

The issue hasn’t been released yet but once it hits the stands (slated for July 13), you have to grab a copy of your own to get the full lowdown. It’s certainly worth the read. Subscribe now to get Issue 5 through 8 delivered right to your doorstep!
