Beer Connoisseur Gary Monterosso Predicts Top 5 Beers of Kennett Winterfest

In preparation for Kennett Winterfest, a sold out first time event from Historic Kennett Square unfolding Saturday, February 23, PA Eats turned to one of our favorite beer-lovers for a little guidance. Gary Monterosso is an award-winning writer, who has written for several national and regional publications. Gary’s first book, Artisan Beer, was released in December 2011 and he can now be seen and heard offering beer tips on NBC 40 and WMGM News Talk 1400. Those accomplishments follow a successful run as host of the popular webcast, “Still Crazy After All These Beers,” ending after over 100 episodes. Now, after scoping out the Kennett Winterfest official brewery list, he’s suggesting a few of his favorites below.

For me, winter is the ideal time of the year for drinking beer. Breweries tend to release most of their fuller, richer flavors during the cold weather months and the beers are meant for maximum enjoyment. Many of the winter beers are darker in color, perhaps lending to the atmosphere.

Whenever I attend a beer festival, I like to seek out those flavors I have never experienced, then work my way to the favorites. Because many of the beers at this festival have an elevated alcohol content, you may not be able to sample as many as you might like, especially if you plan on driving home. That being the case, here are a few beers worth seeking to heighten your overall experience:

Founders Breakfast Stout

In order to maximize your tasting, check for an aroma. In this beer, there is a definite roasted coffee and chocolate smell. That’s because the beer is brewed with roasted oats, blends of coffee and chocolate. The taste will reinforce the smell. Still think beer can’t be for breakfast? 8.3% alcohol-by-volume (abv).

Troegs Nugget Nectar

This is an exceptionally well made amber coming from the Trogner brothers out of Hershey, PA. One could call this the big brother to their Nugget Nectar Ale. If you enjoy that, be prepared to step up to the next level. 7.5% abv

Clown Shoes Vampire Slayer Smoked Imperial Stout

See the word “Imperial” and be prepared to get walloped. This beer will do it to you. It will pour like root beer, but that’s where the similarity ends. There will be a bit of smokiness in the body and that’s an element that doesn’t please all. I recommend trying it to determine for yourself the possibilities. 10% abv.

Dupont Avec Les Bons Voeux

Translates as “With Best Wishes.” This is a special Belgian Saison brewed for the season. It’s complex with notes of spices and herbs. Belgian Farmhouse ales tend to be earthy and this is no exception. There is a noticeable alcohol warmth as it weighs in at 9.5% abv.

Yards Trubbel De Yards

This Philly-based beer also is produced in the Belgian style although the color will be much darker than the Dupont. You’ll note a malty aroma which will transfer to the first sip. There are a lot of flavors competing for your attention, but overall it is satisfying. Should you buy a pint at your local watering hole, allow it to warm a bit and watch this one blossom. 9% abv.
