Destination Outer Banks: 5 Food & Drink Stops You Can’t Miss Along North Carolina Shores

Full Moon Brewery

Ask anyone in the Outer Banks what they love most about the small chain of beaches along the North Carolina shore and they will likely tell you the family-friendly atmosphere draws them back each year. Most of the rental houses are equipped for large, extended families and boast a view of incredible sunrises just footsteps from the beach. We stayed at Gillespie Cottage on Nags Head and cooked most meals in the comfort of our sunny, fully equipped kitchen thanks to a quick stop for ingredients on the way.

Morris Farm Market

3784 Caratoke Highway, Barco, North Carolina

Acres of farmland surround this favorite tourist spot, an iconic red barn known for ciders, sweets and fresh-picked produce. Meander through the snack display for a generous serving of peanut brittle or fudge. Pick up a jug of sweet cider or locally produced wine after sampling their six flavors. After you grab your favorite fruits and veggies, reward yourself with a heaping cone of ice cream.

Flying Fish

2003 S. Croatan Highway, Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina

Finding a spot for 25 for dinner isn’t always an easy task, but Flying Fish welcomes large groups. Their menu of surf-and-turf favorites such as crab cakes and filets constantly outshines other local restaurants as a top diner’s choice. When you walk through the herbal garden on the patio, Italian favorites such as basil and thyme permeate the air. In the restaurant, the staff is always friendly and helpful, which is a key to satisfaction for large dining groups. Save room for dessert and try the homemade ice cream cookie sandwich, which packs layers of sweets into a finger-friendly sandwich.

Pamlico Jack’s

6708 S. Croatan Highway, Nags Head, North Carolina

An invitation to view the sunset at Pamlico Jack’s promises an unforgettable sight, but it gets even better. The outside bar of the restaurant is actually a replica pirate ship, complete with sails and a mast. Stand atop the captain’s quarters and experience live music with a view of the sound. This restaurant is great for families, with lots of open space for outdoor yard games. Try the island-inspired favorite, shrimp feast, for a mound of locally caught shrimp served as you like it.

Full Moon Cafe & Brewery

208 Queen Elizabeth St., Manteo Waterfront, North Carolina

A short drive from North Carolina’s can’t-miss aquarium, the Full Moon Cafe is a great spot to grab a sandwich and a hand-crafted beer in Manteo. When you sip the buttery, smooth Lost Colony Ale it’s easy to understand why the recipe has stood as-is for hundreds of years. A pint pairs well with the Mediterranean wrap, which includes a robust combo of roasted veggies and provolone. With great food, this cozy nook tops our list of spots to sip and savor as a couple in the Outer Banks.

Fat Boyz

7206 S. Virginia Dare Trail, Nags Head, North Carolina

No trip to the Outer Banks is complete without an outing for ice cream. Fat Boyz has been serving shakes, flurries and sundaes in Nags Head for 20 years. The creamy soft serve and toppings come in endless combinations. However, a classic vanilla cone showcases the simple pleasure of beachside ice cream.
