Fourth of July Guide to Philadelphia: Independence Day Celebrations, Fireworks & More

Fourth of July is right around the corner. Where do you plan to celebrate? From fireworks and Fourth of July food-centric parties to history-laden events, Philadelphia offers much during this patriotic holiday that you simply must take advantage of.

Celebration of Freedom Ceremony

Start the day off with a little history and Fourth of July significance at the Celebration of Freedom Ceremony on the steps of beautiful Independence Hall at 6th and Chestnut Streets. From 10–11 a.m. join other Philadelphians for patriotic music, speeches and even a partial reading of the famed Declaration of Independence.

Independence Day Parade

Nothing says holiday like a parade. The Independence Day Parade, starting at Independence Hall at 11 a.m., is a great way to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday. With over 5,000 participants taking part in this year’s Fourth of July parade, it is sure to be spectacular. Marching bands, floats and so much more will entertain the crowd.

Party on the Parkway

Looking for a family-friendly event that features food, music, games and fun? Look no further than Party on the Parkway, an outdoor celebration stretching from 20th Street to Eakins Oval on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The party takes place from noon–7 p.m. and offers a huge block party with patriotic flair. The Questlove stage is sure to be a popular draw as well.

America’s Birthday Party with Betsy Ross and Termini Bros. Bakery

Combine history with fabulous bakery treats at America’s Birthday Party with Betsy Ross and Termini Bros. Bakery. Head over to the Independence Visitor Center located at 6th and Market Streets for a cupcake celebration at 1 p.m. on the Fourth of July. In addition to seeing the largest American flag made of cupcakes, you’ll get to have a taste, too.

Super Scooper All-You-Can-Eat Ice Cream Festival

Kids and adults alike will love attending the Super Scooper All-You-Can-Eat Ice Cream Festival at the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing. Bring your appetite for ice cream down to 101 South Columbus Boulevard, indulge in all-you-can-eat ice cream and support a great cause at the same time, the Joshua Kahan Fund to help in the fight against pediatric cancer. The event is $7 per person and takes place on July 4 from noon–6 p.m. (continues on July 5 and 6). 100% of the proceeds go directly to fight pediatric leukemia at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Philly Fourth of July Jam and Fireworks Finale

Music lovers wait all year for Philly Fourth of July Jam. Taking place at the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and 21st Street, concert-goers will see a variety of musical acts, including Nicki Minaj, The Roots, Ed Sheeran, Jennifer Hudson and more. The music starts at 7 p.m. and goes until the fireworks grand finale lights up the sky at 11 p.m. over the Art Museum.

Longwood Gardens Fireworks and Fountains

Although not in the city limits of Philly, the Longwood Gardens Fireworks and Fountains event simply has to be added to the list. This Kennett Square locale is offering a fabulous fireworks display and colorful fountain show to the tunes of patriotic songs, a perfect family event for this most historic of holidays.

No matter whether you want your Fourth of July to include food, live music or patriotic celebrations, or even a bit of everything, Philadelphia is the place to celebrate this special holiday.
