In colonial times, Philadelphians strolled the cobblestone streets of the city dressed in multiple layers from head to toe with no refuge from the heat and humidity. They kept cool by drinking a special concoction called shrub— a slightly acidic beverage of chilled fruits, juices and vinegar, often spiked with rum or brandy.
Old City Coffee has been a staple in Philadelphia since 1985 (not quite the colonial era) and is offering their own modern take on the shrub to help keep Philadelphia’s hot and thirsty residents chilled out this summer. The coffeehouse is currently serving a Raspberry Honey Shrub, made with fresh red raspberries, apple cider vinegar, San Pellegrino, lemon and honey.
The Raspberry Honey Shrub is made fresh daily and will be offered through September. This sparkling, fruity sipper is served in a 20-ounce cup for $5, including tax. We hear that other shrub varieties may be available soon!
