Bala Cynwyd’s Trail’s End Café is joining the “Make America Cake Again” effort by offering an Election Day special—a slice of Election Cake and cup of coffee for $5. Bakeries, cafes, individuals and educators alike are participating in the non-partisan nationwide project to raise awareness about our culinary heritage and the role food has historically played in the political and social life in the United States. The group behind the grassroots movement also hopes to generate funds for voting access and rights.

We immediately contacted our bakery, High Point, and asked how we could collaborate. Trail’s End Café opened in May to create a community coffee house where our neighbors gather to work, relax and socialize. Having the opportunity to vote is worth celebrating, and what better way than with cake, coffee and community?”

Dating back to colonial America, Election Cake was prepared, mostly by women, for town hall meetings and community celebrations to encourage eligible voter attendance. The “Make America Cake Again” effort was started by OWL Bakery in Asheville, NC. The project has spread nationwide. High Point’s Election Cake will be made with dried cranberries and dates, pecans, orange and spices. Trail’s End Café and High Point will each donate 10% of sales to the League of Women Voters’ Philadelphia Chapter, a non-partisan non-profit organization that works on voting access, education and policy.
