10 Interesting Facts You Didn’t Know About Manayunk

It’s safe to say we’re big fans of Manayunk. And what’s not to love? Manayunk’s got a booming food scene and culture that’s unmatched and is just a hop, skip and jump from downtown Philadelphia. Everything you could want is in walking distance. We recently came across some fun facts about Manayunk that had us wondering if the locals even knew them. Listed below are a few tidbits we learned about “The Yunk.”

1. Manayunk was used in a scene out of one of M Night Shyamalan’s movies.

If the scene in Unbreakable with Bruce Willis in Pretzel Park looks familiar to you, that’s because it should be familiar. This scene was filmed with St. Josaphat’s Cathedral in the background.

2. If you’re looking to be star-struck, Marchiano’s Bakery is your go-to spot.

You’ll find The Temptations, Frank Sinatra and even Alyson Hannigan (of How I Met Your Mother) on the bakery’s Wall of Fame. Marchiano’s Bakery has been serving locals and not-so locals since officially opening its doors in 1984.

3. Many of the streets in Manayunk were named after the original settlers.

Over 300 years ago, when the first settlers called Manayunk home, streets were named for those who first settled here. Back in the 1700s, Tower St. was named after Captain Tower, the man who brought the first hotel to Manayunk.
