On Tap – Central Waters Coffee Stout

On Tap is a regular column featuring our recommendations on the most unique new draft beer offerings from local pubs.

Our Recommendation: Central Waters Brewing Company’s Brewhouse Coffee Stout

Where: PJ Whelihans, 853 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, PA

I recently sat down with Danielle Henne, the General Manager of PJ Whelihans, to see what unique beers they have on tap. It was a tough choice as they are rotating 24 taps with craft beers! After some discussion, we chose Central Waters Brewing Company‘s Brewhouse Coffee Stout from Amherst, Wisconsin.

This stout poured dark brown with a small head and smelled slightly of chocolate. According to Central Waters, the stout is made with roasted coffee beans from Emy J’s, a coffee and ice cream shop in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.

Danielle noted, “it tastes like coffee and chocolate, though the coffee really comes through. I don’t taste any bitterness. It’s just nice and smooth.” After another sip,  she added, “I think this would pair well with our Cheddar Beef and Ale or maybe the PJ Pub Steak.”

I agreed with Danielle about the coffee taste. This stout is very smooth with a nice coffee finish – it makes an excellent dessert beer. At 8.2%, this is a great way to round out a decadent meal (as long as you have a designated driver.)

PJ’s has one more keg of this Coffee Stout so it should be on tap for another week or so. Danielle informed me that in addition to the 24 rotating taps for craft beers, they also have 24 taps with a mix of domestic and imported beers. They just installed heat lamps on the new outside patio, where they have an additional 6 taps at the outside bar.
