Sk80’s Night is fast approaching, and though it’s important to support the cause, it’s also important to look fabulous while doing so. You could scour YouTube for old skate videos like Search for Animal Chin, or watch Thrashin’, available for instant play on Netflix. You could search your basement for old issues of Thrasher or google image every aspect of eighties skateboarding. Maybe you’re just too busy and don’t have time for such trips down memory lane. Don’t fret, I’ve done it for you. I’m here to break down the fashions, and make your life just a bit easier. Remember, there’s a contest for best 80’s outfit, so be sure to bring it.
I’ve never been a skateboarder myself, and don’t claim to be an aficionado, okay let’s be honest here, I begged my Mom and Dad for a skateboard at fifteen or sixteen and proceeded to use it only for riding down hills and the perceived coolness factor of carrying it around. I later gave it away to my boyfriend. I have, however, been a connoisseur of all things skateboarding from the early age of nine, when I discovered I was fascinated with the music, the style, and the hotness that seemed to exude from boys carrying or riding skateboards. I’ve never claimed not to be shallow. Let’s start with the basic look. Early eighties skaters continued with the seventies look and wore lots of tube socks, Converse Chuck Taylors, cut-off or gym shorts and Rector kneepads. As the eighties continued the shorts got a little longer, and the colors brighter. Patterns and specific brands worked their way into skate fashion as well.
Ripped or colored jeans, colored shorts or board shorts with kneepads, crazy patterned sweaters and shirts, or a t-shirt emblazoned with skateboard company logos, sleeves optional, and a pair of skate shoes easily completed an eighties skate look. Common accessories included the t-shirt sleeve headband, frosted hair, painter’s hats, etc. etc.
