Picture this: fresh burrata, Serrano ham margherita wood-fired pizza, kobe beef “smashball”; and hot bombolini with three sauces for dessert.
Yes, here on the Main Line. Do I have your attention?
Just last week, Scott Morrison (Berwyn’s Nectar) and Vince Shiavone opened Avero Craft Pizzeria in the Devon Whole Foods Shopping Center. The menu is an upscale, modern interpretation of authentic Italian cooking. Best of all, this restaurant is approachable in price as well as its welcoming atmosphere.
Avero translates as “to the truth,” referencing the restaurant’s deference to Italian techniques as well as local ingredients. Pizzas are cooked in a 900-degree, wood-fire oven. The mozzarella is hand-pulled in-house. And salads are tossed tableside. “Smashballs” range from the aforementioned Kobe beef to a meatless eggplant and chickpea and crab with saffron aioli.
At Avero, a fast-casual restaurant concept meets upscale touches. Brightly colored outdoor umbrellas interwoven between strings of white lights suspend from the ceiling over the tables, providing an al-fresco atmosphere.
Avero bustles with a team that’s eager to please, taking guests’ orders on an iPad. Our server, Colleen, offered warm hospitality and obvious breadth of knowledge about the menu.
Beautifully composed complimentary bites start off the meal at Avero, including squares of focaccia, peppers, olives and cheese bites. The menu offers a breadth of options appealing to both adventurous and more traditional tastes. Try the antipasti appetizer comprised of a truffle sheep-milk ricotta, fresh mozzarella and heirloom tomatoes. The end of the dish was dusted with a fine mixture of dried basil, sugar and salt for seasoning. Avero’s tangy broken Caesar melded easily with the shaved goat-milk ricotta, Parmesan, croutons and white anchovies. Lastly, we sampled the tartufo pizza topped with fresh mozzarella, romano, generous shavings of black truffle and a farmer’s egg, evenly distributed.
Avero achieves what few restaurants have on the Main Line. Offering a casual atmosphere that accommodates most every kind of diner – friends, families and couples; coupled with a refined experience and an appealingly unique menu at approachable pricing. We’ll be back. How’s next week?
