Hunters Share the Harvest: Chester County Food Bank Teams Up with Local Butchers to Process Venison

Did you know that in Pennsylvania 1,135,000 people (that’s one in 11) live at risk for hunger and that 450,000 people per month meet a part of their food needs through a food pantry, cupboard or soup kitchen? Chester County Food Bank is teaming up with Hunters Sharing the Harvest to receive venison to distribute to partnering agencies as a lean, nutritious source of protein.

Successfully Feeding the Hungry for 22 Years

Since 1991, the Hunter’s Sharing the Harvest venison donation program, (HSH) has coordinated the processing and distribution of donated wild game from hunters and municipal herd reduction sources to hungry people throughout Pennsylvania. An average-sized deer will provide enough highly-nutritious, low-cholesterol meat for 200 meals. Last year, HSH coordinated the delivery of nearly 200,000 meals of venison to hungry Pennsylvanians.

Get Involved Locally

The Chester County Food Bank has a venison program that benefits the 90 meal sites, food cupboards and social service organizations that it serves. You can help feed those in need by donating your deer through one of the local participating butchers. The venison is processed free of charge and is picked up by the Chester County Food Bank after processing. Local butchers participating include Foresta’s Market in Phoenixville, Countryside Butchering in Honey Brook, Fisher’s Butcher Shop in Quarryville and Smokers Custom Butchering in Ronks.
