Our Recommendation: Black Irish Stout, Earth Bread + Brewery

Where: 7136 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19119

On a recent visit to the eclectic Earth Bread + Brewery, I tasted a delectable Black Irish Stout. I was so enamored by this creamy, smooth dark stout, I contacted one of the brewers, Jon Defibaugh, to learn more about it.

Jon explained the Black Irish Stout has been on tap since early July and will only be available until the end of the month. “We rarely brew the same beer twice. There are so many styles and variations that can be brewed.” Jon said. “We like to keep the beer list ever changing.”

He explained the stout is made using roasted barley and oats, and then fermented with a  classic British yeast strain. I asked how he would describe this stout. “Roasty, creamy and smooth with hints of chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and a slight lactic bite.” Jon  recommended the stout be paired with Earth’s “Tomato Pie. Nothing says complex flavors through simple ingredients like a stout. and our tomato pie embodies that same sentiment. Rich and full of flavor but begging you to come back for more.”

The Black Irish Stout is also unique in that it comes in “at 3.9%, you would think it might be light and bland but it is quite the opposite – bold, complex and eccentric.”

Hustle down to Earth Bread & Brewery soon to sample the Black Irish Stout. Once it  is tapped out, Jon and his partners will be tapping Berliner Weisse, an Indian Pale Ale.
