“Tipsy? Taxi!” is a free service sponsored by AAA Mid-Atlantic, Yellow Cab and the Baltimore State Highway Administration providing free taxi rides (up to $50) on New Year’s Eve from Baltimore bars to home addresses in the metropolitan Baltimore area. By calling the “Tipsy? Taxi!” hotline (1-877-963-TAXI) individuals (whether or not they are AAA members) can dispatch a cab associated with the program for FREE – a no-brainer alternative to driving under the influence. The program, offered by AAA, was initiated to help reduce the number of DUIs and alcohol-related deaths on New Year’s Eve for drivers who overindulge during the end-of-year celebrations. Similar programs have been offered by AAA in other metropolitan areas across the country including the “Tipsy Tow” program. “Tipsy Tow” allows inebriated motorists to call for a free tow on New Year’s Eve (for themselves and their cars) as long as the destination is within 10 miles. After 10 miles, standard AAA towing rates would apply. Programs like this one have been successful at encouraging partying motorists to find alternatives to driving under the influence on a holiday often associated with drinking champagne and other forms of alcohol. Drinking and driving is not only dangerous but also extremely risky considering the high number of police officers who will be keeping roadways safe this weekend. Do you think a program like this one would work in the Philadelphia area? Contact the AAA Mid-Atlantic and let them know you’d like to see “Tipsy? Taxi!” in Philadelphia for New Year’s Eve 2011. Call AAA Member Services at 1-866-MEMBERS (1-866-636-2377) 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. (Click HERE to check out the AAA flyer in PDF format.)
