For the past eight weeks, customers have been able to enjoy fresh New York-style bagels without having to go to the Big Apple.
These bagels are kettle-boiled and parbaked in a small bakery in New York and shipped daily to the New York Bagel Cafe and Deli (103 Turner Lane, in West Chester’s Turner Square Shopping Center). Customers have been raving about these bagels, according to owners Chris and Gordon Mason. The couple (who married atop the Empire State Building) has decorated the new business with beautiful black-and-white photos of landmarks like Grand Central Station and the Statue of Liberty. Signs for subway stops line the walls of this cozy café, which has wireless internet access.
Their menu includes an assortment of bagels (including Honey Whole Wheat and Sun Dried Tomato), hot and cold sandwiches made with Boar’s Head meats, Green Mountain Coffee (which comes in organic flavors), eggs, salads, muffins, cupcakes, and all-day breakfast.
The bagels are very doughy, hard on the outside, with a delicious soft interior. The staff includes a qualified pastry chef, and there are always new menu items, like a caramel apple wrap or grilled salmon wrap. Chris Mason puts a lot of emphasis on finding healthy items for the menu: Whole wheat bagels, mini bagels, lavender whole grain pancakes, and a children’s menu with lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and organic butter. They are looking into serving gluten-free bagels and breads.
Even though New York Bagel Cafe and Deli is part of a franchise, the owners try to add a local angle to their store. The produce comes from the Produce Place in Kennett Square, smoked fish comes from Sugartown Smoked Specialties in West Chester, and the cupcakes are from Iced by Betsy.
They are looking into showcasing local artwork and constantly give back to area charities. Any unsold baked good is donated to local charities each night, including Safe Harbor and the Salvation Army. The “Charitywich” is going to be a special sandwich on their menu, with a portion of the proceeds donated to local charities.
