The Wheels on the Bus Go…

We had grand plans of getting up early and catching a ferry to the mainland to catch a bus to San Ignacio. However, our accommodations were so comfortable that we decided to lounge in the room for a bit.

Actually, that’s a lie. No wait, that’s two lies. First, the accommodations were not comfortable. P.P.’s bed was basically a sheet on plywood that arched in the middle and I thought I woke up with lice. And second, we kinda messed up with the ferry.

We headed for the ferry dock and after a yum-tastic breakfast of fresh fruit (tons of freshly cut juicy chunks of paradise for only $2.50!) we waited on the dock for the boat… and we waited. And waited. Then we realized, when we saw a boat departing full of tourists a few docks down, that maybe were weren’t the ONLY ones going on the ferry after-all and we were in the wrong spot. hmmmm….

This was just enough time (we had an hour and a half until the next ferry) to catch a few rays on the sandy beach overlooking the waves. I grabbed a banana and was happy as a clam. Even if we did miss the boat.

Eventually we arrived in Belize City. And it was super scary. (Picture: ghetto hiking) That’s all I’ll say. From there we caught a bus to San Ignacio which is inland and a base point for lots of adventurous tours like caving and hiking in the jungle.

The bus was hot and crowded and we were the only ones that were clearly “not from around here.” A few hours later we drove into our home for the next few days. There was a sweet smell of campfire and flowers in the air and it felt like a perfect summer evening. The mountain air scent reminded me of Pennsylvania woods and being on the bus took me back to summer camps of my childhood. I was instantly at peace and wanted to stay as long as possible.

We checked in to a cozy guest house with our own shower (so amazing) and clean, beautiful sheets. The cool air breezed through the windows and we showered to prepare for dinner. I was in the mood for food.

Mmmm….

The Final Dish: P. P. to someone we met in San Ignacio, “I just love the abundance of fresh fruit in Belize, don’t you?”
