Beer Review: Yards, Shake Shack & La Colombe Collaborate on Coffee Stout

Coffee StoutYards Brewing Company recently teamed up with their longtime friends at Shake Shack and La Colombe to brew a limited-release Coffee Stout that benefits Mural Arts.

The trifecta of metropolitan icons released their Coffee Stout this past Friday and are quickly emptying limited kegs of the beer at the three local Shake Shack locations, La Colombe’s café and Yards’ Tasting Room. Friday afternoon, Shake Shack Culinary Director Mark Rosati, La Colombe Co-Founder Todd Carmichael and Yards Brewmaster/Owner Tom Kehoe celebrated the release of their Coffee Stout by enjoying a few pints alongside a burger at Center City’s Shake Shack.

Coffee Stout and Shake Shack Burger

The brew was the center of attention as gatherers mingled around the burger shop’s high-top seating area, and plastic cups of the black, roasty brew came out in droves. The beer is dark, malty and contains persisting caramel and coffee notes through the use of lightly roasted La Colombe beans from Haiti. Those qualities worked with the juicy roadside-style burger and crispy fries to create a totally satisfying meal. Some patrons even topped off their late lunch by tossing a scoop of ice cream into their rich Coffee Stout.

Even sweeter than a beer float, the Coffee Stout collaborative effort also finds a way to improve the look of the city. $2 from each pint of Yards Coffee Stout goes towards Mural Arts, the same organization responsible for the beautiful mural above the Center City Shake Shack. Visual artist Jonathan Mandell also got involved in the project by creating the eye-catching poster for the brew. His artwork lends an impression of a glorious, distorted view of the city around the bold Yards tap handle. Mandell declared, “I’m all about the Coffee Stout!”

The brew is a warming delight, and its roasted qualities work surprisingly well alongside a smoky Shake Shack burger. While supplies last, find the Coffee Stout at Yards’ tasting room at 901 Delaware Ave. in Northern Liberties, La Colombe’s café at 1335 Frankford Ave. in Fishtown and Shake Shack locations in Center City, University City and King of Prussia.
