Wednesday, April 2, Kati Mac Floral Designs hosted their first terrarium class at their shop on High Street in West Chester.
Depending how immersed you are in Pinterest, you might be aware that terrarium classes are the new “thing” these days. Not only do you get to learn about awesome terrariums and their mini eco-systems, you get to make one and take it home. Who doesn’t want to enjoy some wine, cheese and sweets while getting down and crafty with like-minded friendly folk?

When I first met Kati Mac’s Allison and Kate, I casually mentioned how I was looking for somewhere to finally host a terrarium class locally at a reasonable price versus some of the crazy prices you see elsewhere. Both ladies immediately got on board with the idea and the planning began.
This class was great because it was the perfect size–not too many people, not too few and everyone got along so well. People who didn’t know one another at the beginning of class were becoming Instagram besties by the end of it.

Going into the class I knew a wee bit about terrariums because of that magical world of Pinterest, however my education was sorely lacking. There are quite a few rules when making a terrarium to ensure your mini eco-system survives. This is some of what I learned…
Top tips for taking care of your terrarium:

-
Foliage plants can be in lidded containers, but succulents can’t have a lid–it creates too much moisture. For lidded terrariums, once a month take the lid off for a day and let it air out.
-
Keep your terrarium out of direct sunlight (they’ll cook). It should be placed in a bright area with indirect light.
-
Don’t be afraid to trim the plants back if they get a little wild.
-
At some point, something will die. It might just be a leaf or it could be a whole plant; whatever it is, don’t be afraid to pluck it right out and replace it if you’d like.
At this time, Kati Mac plans to host future events, so stay tuned to their Facebook page for event info. Classes at the shop require RSVPs because of limited space.
