After a night of crazy drinks (we had some sort of bitter shot that is made with roots of jungle plants and “cleanses your body” whatever THAT means) and local music (drumming followed by hip-hop music from 5 years ago) at a local bar we called it a night.
In the morning we got a fry jack breakfast and headed to the local market for some fruit. We found Carlos here wandering and talking with the other locals. He took us on a mini-tour of the market and peeled different fruits for us to try. He’s the BEST.
We caught a taxi to some Mayan ruins (I have to look up the spelling of them so I don’t mess it up) and we left the wonderful town of San Ignacio.Â
We left our items at the base of the site with Dora (Carlos’s friend) and took a ferry across the river to begin the hike up the hill. We got lazy though and flagged down a van that was headed up. What? It was really hot.
P.P. apparently has a height “issue” so I talked him through the many, many, many, many steps to the top of the ancient structure. The view was breathtaking and literally took both of our breath away. It was awesomely high.
P.P. and I sat at the top and shared with each other some deep thoughts and inspirational conversation. We agreed that we were very lucky to be able to see all of this and then we made the trek back down. We were on our way to Punta Gorda (in the very south of Belize) where my college roomate Patty and her husband Sean are in the Peace Corps.Â
The Final Dish: Promises that P.P. and I made at the top (Most are from a card a friend gave me and are taken directly from Christian D. Larson a leader of “new thought.”)
1- Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
2- Look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
3- Forget mistakes of the past and press on to the great achievements of the future.
4- Give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
5- Live in the faith that the whole world is on your side as long as you are true to the best that is in you!
6- Always try new foods and savor life. (we added that one)
