Our Recommendation: Lancaster Brewing Company’s Shoo-Fly Porter, Cask Conditioned, 6% ABV
Where: The Flying Pig Saloon, 121 East King Street, Malvern, PA
On the day before Thanksgiving, with everyone’s mind on pie, I ducked into the Flying Pig Saloon in Malvern while waiting for my son to arrive on the train. Checking out their draft menu, I was delighted to see a beer I’d been looking to sample–Lancaster Brewing’s Shoo-Fly Porter –available cask conditioned, so I decided to give it a try.
The shoo-fly porter poured a dark brown with beautiful mocha frothy head. It not as thick, or as sweet, as I had expected it would be. It’s not a dessert beer at all, but a sessionable porter with just a hint of the Lancaster County molasses. It’s drinkable and, at least with the cask conditioned, very smooth. It’s an enjoyable porter for those that drink cask conditioned beers. If you are craving a beer for your sweet tooth however, I suggest choosing one of our top ten dessert beers instead.
While I was at the Flying Pig Saloon, I also sampled the Russian River Supplication, a brown ale aged with sour cherries in aged pinot barrels. This was a true sour beer, the vibrant cherry taste lingered after my tasting.
Both Shoo-Fly Porter and the Russian River Supplication were just tapped, so should be available throughout Thanksgiving Day weekend.
