Your Newest Beer Stop – Devon’s Mile Post Pub

Farewell gigantic cases of beer. And hello craft six-packs.

Our house is much happier when the fridge is stocked with a variety of our favorite craft brews … Ayinger Celebrator, Weyerbacher Blithering Idiot, and the new Victory Summer Love.

We’re seeing an increasing number of supermarkets sell alcohol in smaller amounts, via restaurants attached to their main buildings. And as of May 26, there’s a great new option on the Main Line: Mile Post Pub, located at the Whole Foods Market in Devon.

The intro of this boutique pub is part a larger renovation the store has been undergoing for several months, in an effort to add 5000 sq. ft. of new space. (Stop by on Saturday, June 18 for the grand re-opening activities.)

The name Mile Post, was inspired by the mile post at the nearby corner of Old Eagle School Rd. and Route 30, the 14-mile-marker to Philadelphia. The store team is working with local historian Margaret DiPiano to gather more information and early photos of the Devon area, circa 1900.

But let’s get back to the important topic at hand … the beer. Mile Post specializes in American craft brews, and features a walk in fridge with beers floor to ceiling. Expect this area to grow in future months. A rotating mix of beers is on tap, and can be ordered by size from glass to growler. From my observation, beers are competitively priced compared to other nearby outlets.

Joe Breslin is the man to ask for when you stop in. As the Pub’s beer specialist, he’s on-site most days of the week, offering brew advice and samples of draft beers as well as planning special events. What’s in the works? Expect tap take-overs with local breweries, “meet the brewer” evenings, as well as rare keg nights (on Friday 6/10, Joe will be tapping Stillwater Debutante.)

The 57-seat casual spot offers seats inside the pub area, seating in a “café” within the store, as well as a few tables on an outside veranda.  If you don’t like beer, you’re in luck, because there are also 16 wines-by-the-glass offered – eight of which are organic, and eight selections from around the globe.

To soak up all the beer and wine, check out a short menu of small plates that can be ordered right at the Pub. They’re all foods that you’ll want to eat while drinking a few cold ones: Spanish marcona almonds, fromagerie and charcuterie boards, and Mediterranean feta salsa. There are also “Taste of Philly” soft pretzel bites, and a Hot Smoked Salmon with horseradish sauce and bagel chips. Guests are also welcome to buy food from the store (check out the expanded prepared foods section), and bring it to eat at the Pub.
