Earth Bread + Brewery‘s Tom Baker is hosting a not-to-miss ice beer course at Tria Fermentation School (Medical Arts Building, 1601 Walnut Street, Philadelphia) on Thursday, April 5, from 6:30 – 8:00 pm.
While ice was slim this winter, Tria’s making up for it with their upcoming course – one that is hosted by local brewing champ Tom Baker (of the former Heavyweight Brewing Company and of Mount Airy’s lovable Earth Bread & Brewery brewpub).
What’s “Ice Beer,” you ask? Attendees will spend the evening speeding into the wonderful world of “fractional freezing” (i.e. beer brewed in the traditional manner and then, chilled to 24 to 28 degrees). Baker’s scientific chatter will break down the art of “icing” batches of beer, where once ice crystals form during the freezing process, they’re filtered off, and the beer is given more body – and most importantly, more alcohol.
During the upcoming Thursday night course, instructor Tom will feature four of Earth’s beers, all of which will be seen in their before and after guises. Plus, Tria will throw in a German Eisbock – the style that inspired this whole creative adventure. Cheeses and light snacks will be served with the beers, and cost of the class is $55 per person.
