Our Recommendation: The Roast Beef Sandwich

Where: Ye Olde Coventry Pub, Route 100 & Temple Road, Pottstown

An old friend recently visited from afar – a friend we’ll refer to as “Tulsa.” Tulsa is a ravenous meat eater who often leads me on food pilgrimages to find the region’s best roast beef sandwiches.

“Hell, that’s what y’all are known for, right?”

Apparently, this mid-westerner has seen one too many Arby’s commercials touting their “Philly Beef & Swiss.”

Recently, I took Tulsa to several notable area spots, including famed Nick’s in Delco and Newtown Square’s Ale House before treating him to my #1 pick: The tender roast beef “beauts” that are served at Ye Olde Coventry Pub along Route 100, just south of Pottstown.

Succulent beef is hand-carved reverentially by 30-year bar veteran Bill Owens. With a skilled and ever-patient precision, he is like the Jimi Hendrix of the steamship table. Tulsa and I watched with mouth-agape worship as Bill lovingly piled that meat atop a fresh baked Corropolese Kaiser roll, adding a slice of provolone and a generous splash of au jus…

Seven-fifty couldn’t be better spent.

When you go, I recommend you ask for horseradish and chopped cherry peppers; they come in requisite clear plastic tavern jars.

The pub offers a tidy selection of draft beers, usually including something frothy from Victory Brewing Company, along with a crisp German pilsner. For a sweet treat with your beef, try the Wert’s Birch Beer, which is always on tap.

For his next trip east, Tulsa wants to eliminate the run-around and head straight on over to the pub. The roast beef is amazing and it sure beats a Philly Beef & Swiss, any day.
