While 2015 may not be the year for flying cars, time travel is just a download away thanks to Time Machine Tours.
Time Machine Tours is a newly released, free iOS app that features self-guided walking tours that take historical photos out of the archives and bring them to life. Each tour contains 10–15 photographs with historical captions that are plotted out on a map exactly where they were taken.
Users can hold the old photo over its current location, giving the illusion of looking into the past. Time Travelers do not need to visit the location to access the photos, and stops can be viewed anywhere in the world.
“The goal of the app is to make historical information fun, easy to access, and engaging,” said Time Machine Tours founder and test pilot Kyle Hudson. “We want to change how people see history. Our users will see history like never before, right in front of them.”
The app currently features three New York City tours: a Bronx Tour, Manhattan Tour and a Happy Holidays! tour that runs until January. Photos range from the original Yankees Stadium prior to the first pitch in 1923 to the timeless tradition of ice skating under Rockefeller Center in 1943. Time Travelers can also visit tours in Philadelphia and its suburbs, Washington, D.C., and Chicago.
Time Machine Tours continues to partner with museums, educational institutions, historical societies, photographers, artists, tourism bureaus and media companies to build tours across the country. A virtual tour creates fun content that raises brand awareness and can drive foot traffic to specific places. New content is added weekly.
The app is now available to download in the iTunes store. Learn more by visiting the website or follow Time Machine Tours on Facebook and Twitter.
