Pennsylvania General Store will be celebrating 30 wonderful years in Reading Terminal Market on Friday, September 15. To mark the occasion, this Philadelphia institution is asking its patrons to join in on the festivities with a locally themed party!
Starting at noon in Reading Terminal Market’s Piano Court seating area, the store will unveil a giant one-of-a-kind cake created by Flying Monkey Bakery, which will feature some favorite local products including Peanut Chews, Tastykakes, Asher’s chocolate-covered pretzels and Wilbur Buds. During this time, more than a dozen General Store vendors will be joining the party and providing samples of the best products Pennsylvania has to offer.
Guests will also have the opportunity to try the “world’s greatest caramels” by Éclat Chocolate, have a card printed by Paprika Letterpress, enjoy fresh-baked Philly soft pretzels and have their photos taken with the Phillie Phanatic!
Pennsylvania General Store owners Michael and Julie Holahan started their business in 1987. Their mission, then and now, was to provide excellent customer service and spearhead the “buy local” movement. They originally operated as a box lunch business, and would gather different prepared foods from various merchants at the Market and deliver them as a Reading Terminal Box Lunch throughout Center City. The business grew into what it is today: a bustling retail store, mail-order and e-commerce business that assembles gift baskets of Pennsylvania-produced food and goods, all while encouraging local pride.
“I am elated to be celebrating this milestone. Since Michael’s passing in March 2016, we have all worked very hard to continue his vision of supporting local purveyors and craftsmen. I know Michael would be very proud that we are celebrating 30 years!” said Julie Holahan, owner of the Pennsylvania General Store. “Join us in commemorating our anniversary and let us thank you for your continued years of business support of the local movement. We are looking forward to many years to come.”
