The Story of Georges Perrier to Hit the Silver Screen

When we think “Philadelphia culinary icon,” we think Georges Perrier. His Le Bec-Fin set the standard and reigned supreme on the Philadelphia culinary scene before there even was a Philadelphia culinary scene. For more than four decades, first on Spruce Street before landing on Walnut, Le Bec-Fin earned various honors, with Esquire naming it the best French restaurant in America, a 1994 Condé Nast readers’ poll ranking it as the best restaurant in the country and, of course, its near-consistent five-star rating.

When rumor broke in 2010 that Le Bec-Fin was to close, filmmaker Erika Frankel began diligently documenting the last years of the restaurant. It didn’t happen right away—the end was three years in the making. During that time Frankel gathered enough information to put together King Georgesa documentary set to make its debut next month in Durham, N.C., at the 18th Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, an annual international nonfiction cinema event.
