The Pub at Wegmans: A Unique Dining Experience in Your Local Market

In continuing my love affair with all things supermarket and beer related, I knew that I had to finally visit The Pub at Wegmans, located inside the Wegmans Supermarket in King of Prussia. This latest Wegmans store opened in May of 2012, so I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to visit. I sat down with Store Manager Kevin Lang, who guided me through some of the delicious offerings of the Pub.

Wegmans, as a corporation, likes to partner with local purveyors in order to bring customers the freshest food and beverage from the community. Lucky for us, that means local favorite, Sly Fox Brewing Company, provides one exclusive beer each season for The Pub. Right now, they are serving up Sly Fox Winter Fest, a medium bodied lager. But don’t wait too long to try this beer because as of March, Sly Fox will be exclusively releasing a Red Ale at all the Pubs at Wegmans in the area (Collegeville, Malvern and King of Prussia).

If the Sly Fox offering isn’t to your liking, The Pub also boasts several other taps including  seasonal Sam Adams and Victory Brewing Company selections, standard favorites like Guinness, Yuengling Lager and Stella Artois, as well as Killian’s Irish Red for those looking to get in that St. Patrick’s Day spirit. If beer isn’t your thing, you can always order a glass of fine wine. Right now, The Pub is featuring wines of Italy such as Pio Cesare Dolcetto D’Alba, a fresh and fruity Red, as well as Terlano Terlaner Classico, a blend of Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc.  If a cocktail is what you are seeking, the Pub has got you covered with some signature drinks. Right now, you can dive into a Jack O Rita: tangerine juice, Jose Cuervo Tequila, Malibu Rum, and a little bit of Sprite or the Philly Phlyer: Blue Coat Gin (made locally in Philly!), Triple Sec and Orange Juice.

If all of this wasn’t enough to get you out to The Pub at Wegmans, then their extensive bottled beer selection should. The take-out beer section features over 800 different bottle varieties that will certainly make any beer lover smile. Their goal is to feature the best selections of beer with a heavy Pennsylvania craft beer focus. They frequently receive some of the most sought after beers as well. For instance, Wegmans was able to get seasonal local favorite, Troegs Mad Elf as well as the in high demand Bell’s (Michigan) Hop Slam. Kevin tells me that the lonely four cases of Hop Slam received never even made it to the sales floor because of the devoted beer customers who called relentlessly seeking it. As soon as word hit the street, they were gone!

One of my favorite things about the beer section is the popular “Mix a Six” feature. This allows the customer to design their own six pack from a large selection of bottles. Due to the variety offered, this helps narrow down choices for sure.

Of course, this being Pennsylvania, take out beer sales are limited to two six-packs or the equivalent of 192 ounces. Don’t forget that you can bring or a buy a growler so that you can take out beer straight from the taps inside the Pub.

Of course, with all the amazing food that Wegmans offers in the Market, you can bet that the Pub has a pretty special menu. The Pub menu features everything from small bites to soups and sandwiches to full- fledged entrees. All offerings are prepared daily using product fresh from the Market. Currently, The Pub is featuring a homemade Hummus Plate, served with olives, peppers, marinated artichokes served with grilled Naan bread as well as a braised organic lamb shank, pan seared and served over a bean ragu. Often, recipes (like the braised lamb shank) featured in the popular Wegmans Magazine are used, so if you like it, you can easily reproduce it at home.

The Pub has comfortable, cozy seating for up to 300 patrons and will be opening up their patio as it warms up for an additional 60 guests.  They feature daily specials, such as Monday night “Lobster Mania”, Wednesday night cheese flights paired with a glass of wine for $10, and live music and prime rib on Friday nights.  Manager Kevin Lang says that The Pub at Wegmans’ goal is “to pair great beer, wine and spirits with great food”. I think they have succeeded!
