Mental Break and Dog Tricks

Well I’m back. No, I wasn’t really on vacation for this long, but I did have a fantastic vacation and was in desperate need of a mental break. I’ve had so much going on lately that I haven’t had enough time to sit down and tell you about ALL the exciting food happenings in the area.

What’s kept me so busy? Hmmm…where should I start? Let’s see, how about the fact that I rescued two dogs in the past few months.

Piper, a very hyper border collie/beagle mix, is a beautiful black and white 12-month-old pup with enough energy to run in circles full speed for half an hour, destroy my landlord’s garden in minutes (“Mary, you need to get control of those animals!”) and chew up a few of my favorite panties and socks (but luckily not any of my favorite shoes). She is insanely smart and will do just about anything for a treat (like her mamma), including all the usuals, like sit, lie down, roll over, high five and “wait for your treat.” I’ve had Piper in my life for about 5 months now and we are both learning new tricks every day.

Waffles is a very gentle, fluffy, cuddly little man that I rescued from the SPCA in Charlottesville, VA. I was there on a work trip and had absolutely NO reason to 1: know where the SPCA was; 2: even walk myself inside the place or 3: to adopt a 3-month-old puppy…on a WORK TRIP! But, I believe in a thing called fate, so in this case fate’s name is Waffles. Side note: As I signed the adoption papers and asked for a cardboard box for my new pup, the volunteer asked me what I would name him. “I’m not sure yet, but it has to be a food.”

“Well,” he replied, “whatever you do don’t name him Waffle…my friend named his dog that and I think it’s the dumbest name ever!”

I laughed, yelled inside, “I LOVE IT” but secretly added an “s” to it and knew that Waffles would be his forever name.

The Final Dish:

So, that’s been my life for the past few months; juggling the full-time job, WC Dish and my 2 new canine kids. I didn’t realize how different my life was until I ran into an old friend last night and she said, “The single, traveling, food-loving girl I know has TWO dogs? What has happened to you?” The answer: A lot. More to come…
