Artifacts Uncovered in Valley Forge Dig

Over 200 years ago, in the initial years of the Revolutionary War, thousands of men of the Continental Army called Valley Forge home.  For many months, soldiers were encamped there, including the legendary winter in which Washington’s army became a force to be reckoned with.  Historians and archeologists have been curious to unearth any treasures and artifacts Washington’s troops may have left behind.

Digging beneath the surface at historic Valley Forge began back in 2000, and archeologists are currently wrapping up a 6-week long project.  This latest dig has archeologists quite excited.  As quoted from a blog that details the Archeology of Washington’s Headquarters, “Because these soil deposits are deeper, but still with evidence of human occupation, we are finding a much richer series of artifact deposits.”

How exciting to have such rich history unearthed right in our own back yard.  A recent AP report stated that, “They believe they’ve found evidence of a dining hall that Washington may have used as a ‘war room’ to meet with his top commanders.”  View close-ups of some of the treasures unearthed during this most recent excavation, and read a detailed account of the dig here: http://bit.ly/ak7bY8
