“Empty Bowls” is a grassroots movement that aims to bring together the community for a simple meal of soup and bread to help fight hunger in our area. Friday, November 12 from 5:00pm – 9:00pm join Artisans Gallery and Cafe at their beautifully renovated Bridge Street location for a special fundraiser to benefit Phoenixville Area Community Services (PACS). For a contribution of $20, guests receive a handmade ceramic bowl crafted by local artisans and art students (at Phoenix Village Art Center), filled with delicious soup and bread. You may dine in or take your meal to go. Guests get to keep the bowl as a remembrance of the hunger that exists locally and globally. Please Contact the PACS Office at 610-933-1105 for ticket information or click HERE to register.
Here is some information about the history behind Empty Bowls (from a recent PACS e-newsletter):
“In 1990, a high school art teacher in Michigan helped his students search for a way to raise funds to support a food drive to feed hungry residents of their community. What evolved was a class project with students crafting ceramic bowls for a fund raising meal. Guests were served a simple meal of soup and bread. They were invited to keep their bowls as a reminder of hunger in their midst and throughout the world.
What one group of students began in their art class was the seed for changing many lives. By the following year, the originators had developed this concept into Empty Bowls – a project to provide support for food banks, soup kitchens, and other organizations that fight hunger. Since then, Empty Bowls events have been held throughout the world, and millions of dollars have been raised to combat hunger (www.emptybowls.net).
The Phoenixville area’s tradition with Empty Bowls began in November, 2007. Owners of Artisans Gallery & Café planned and hosted the event. Phoenixville Area Community Services (PACS) was the charity chosen to benefit from funds raised. Through PACS’ emergency food pantry, a monthly average of 162 households receives nonperishable and fresh foods. That’s an average of 224 adults, 117 children and 27 seniors who would go hungry every month if they did not receive food assistance (June 2010).”
