FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
ANDREW: I could tell immediately that it would be an enjoyable night. I thought Jackie was cute, confident, and had a really nice smile.
JACKIE: I arrived a few minutes late and Andrew was already there. I saw him sitting at a table, but I wasn’t positive that it was him, because we had never met before. I greeted the owner, and then Andrew came up to me and introduced himself. He was wearing a blue, button-down shirt, which I thought looked nice on him. I was a little bit nervous prior to the date, but after meeting Andrew I had the impression that we were going to get along well and I was excited to start the evening.
ANDREW: We were scheduled for at wine tasting at 8 o’clock at Black Walnut Winery, followed by dinner.
JACKIE: First we went to Black Walnut Winery for a wine tasting. Next, we went to The Attic for drinks and appetizers. I really liked the choices that were picked out for us, although the location was a little farther than I would normally travel.
THE CONVERSATION:
ANDREW: We talked about the drive up, and about how we were introduced to the idea of the He Said/She Said experience.
JACKIE: The conversation went smoothly and we had a lot to talk about. We talked about our families, jobs, college, where we lived, where we liked to go out, etc. There weren’t really any awkward moments and we got along well.
WINE TASTING:
ANDREW: We had a private room, with smooth jazz playing in the background. The wine tasting was definitely a learning experience for me. We had a wine and cheese tasting, followed by a wine and chocolate pairing. All of the wines were very good, particularly the chardonnay and the final apple wine.
JACKIE: The owners of Black Walnut Winery were very friendly and helpful. Lance was in charge of our wine tasting, and he was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about wine. We tasted three white wines paired with different cheeses, and three red wines paired with different chocolates. All of the wines that we tried were delicious! Andrew accidentally ate the wrong chocolates with his wine, which was funny. After, the owner asked if we would like to try anything else. I wanted to try the apple wine because I had never had anything like it before. Andy agreed to try, too, so that I wouldn’t have to do it alone. The apple wine was unique and tasty, and I was glad that I tried it.
ANDREW: I heard about the Attic from a few co-workers earlier in the day. It was open mic night, primarily a couple guys and their guitars playing a wide variety of music, from Billy Joel to Kings of Leon. I’m a huge fan of live acoustics, so I enjoyed it. We had our own little couch and table. The menu had a wide variety of unique appetizers, and the drink menu was extensive.
JACKIE: I had never been to this area of Pennsylvania before, so I was unfamiliar with The Attic. Upon arriving, Andrew and I were kind of confused about how to get to The Attic versus Harry’s. The Attic had a very swanky atmosphere, with couches as the primary form of seating. We also discovered that it was open mic night, which at first I thought might be a bit loud and chaotic for a first date. However, it turned out to be one man singing with a guitar – he was actually pretty good and played songs that we both liked. The menu was small, but everything on it looked delicious.
THE SERVICE:
ANDREW: The staff was exceptional, very patient and pleasant.
JACKIE: Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. She always knew when we needed something and brought our drinks/food quickly so that we didn’t have to wait very long.
DRINKS:
ANDREW: After the wine tasting, I decided to change it up and try the El Presidente, which was one of the more manly martinis on the list. Definitely something you want to drink slowly.
JACKIE: First, we wanted to try one of The Attic’s signature drinks. I had a champagne raspberry martini drink called Marilyn Monroe, and Andrew had a dirty martini. After, we each had a couple beers (I can’t remember what kind). I accidentally ordered one beer that I really didn’t like and couldn’t even drink. I have never sent anything back in my life, but I had to send it back. Our waitress was super nice about it and assured me that it was not a problem at all.
ANDREW: After our drinks arrived, we decided on three appetizers — the tuna, shrimp wrapped in bacon, and an assortment of fried veggies. The presentation was nice, and everything was exceptional. I think we both liked the fried veggies and shrimp the most, and I would definitely order those again.
JACKIE: We decided to order a few appetizers to split, and it was great because we both wanted to try the same dishes. Andy and I chose the seared tuna, styx and chips (various types of fried veggies), and shrimp lejon (pancetta wrapped shrimp). My favorite choice was the shrimp, but all of our choices were very good. We also decided to split dessert. I gave Andrew a few choices and told him to pick which one he wanted. I was secretly hoping that he would choose the brownie cocktail – he did!
CONVERSATION AND CHEMISTRY:
ANDREW: Conversation was very relaxed and pleasant. I think we both came into the date with an open mind, primarily looking for a nice, casual night out. We talked a lot about life after college, our families, friends, and shared a few unique stories along the way. To be honest, the chemistry was more on the friendship level. Jackie is definitely a sweetheart, but I wouldn’t say sparks were flying.
JACKIE: We had a lot to talk about and started to share more personal stories as the date went on. There were not a ton of sparks, but I enjoyed his company a lot.
DID YOU EXCHANGE NUMBERS?
ANDREW: No
JACKIE: We didn’t. I think he was waiting for me to ask him, but I usually wait for the guy to ask me, and then it just never happened. I felt like he wanted to ask me and I wasn’t sure why he didn’t.
WAS IT A MATCH?
ANDREW: Probably not, since we didn’t exchange numbers.
JACKIE: We got along really well and I would like to hang out with him again.
WAS THERE A KISS?
ANDREW: There was a hug
JACKIE: I hugged him when we said goodbye.
WILL THERE BE A SECOND DATE?
ANDREW: Again, judging that we didn’t exchange numbers, I’m going to say no.
JACKIE: Since we didn’t exchange numbers, I guess not.
HHOW DID YOU LEAVE IT?
ANDREW: Before we knew it, it was 11:30 and we both had to be on our way. This was the only awkward part of the night. I was going to walk her to her car, ask what she thought, and maybe exchange numbers. We were in the parking lot, and she just kinda stopped, offered a hug, and walked to her car. Overall, I think we both had a lot of fun and enjoyed each other’s company. Great wine, delicious food and drinks with friendly, casual conversation.
JACKIE: We didn’t really leave it as anything. This was the only awkward part of the night and we both just kind of said “Bye” and left. I was going to ask for his number, but then he didn’t say anything, so I wasn’t sure if he even wanted it. If I remember correctly he even said, “This is awkward.” On my drive home, I kind of regretted that I didn’t just say something myself.
UPDATE: After hearing both sides of the stor,y the matchmaker had to step in to clear up any confusion. After asking Andrew if the end of the date was awkward because he couldn’t read her or because he wasn’t interested, he responded “To tell you the truth, we had such a great time, great conversation, and before we knew it, we had to leave, and I blew my chance at the end. I’d like to call her if you can pass along her number.” Jackie happily passed on her number for Andrew to have, and he will be calling her this week.
