We recently caught wind that an Exton restaurant was serving up “Naked Cowboys.” Through all our excitement, here’s what they really have to say about that:
As much as you might want to believe that a well-established suburban Philadelphia restaurant is shilling out disrobed men with ten-gallon, err, hats, that’s just not what this is about.
But you can grab a Naked Cowboy at the Riverstone Café in Exton, Chester County Pennsylvania. Naked Cowboy Oyster, that is.
Riverstone Café is the only restaurant in the entire western Philadelphia suburbs that carries the ‘Naked Cowboy’. Riverstone Café’s Executive Chef Anthony DiStefano, a self-described Oyster aficionado himself, calls them as the new boutique Oyster, adding “these are the first Oysters in America to be named after a celebrity, not a region. And in my opinion, they are hands-down the best Oysters coming out of the entire northeastern United States.” Naked Cowboys have also been a routine topic of discussion on Howard Stern’s radio show.
‘Naked Cowboys’ are wild oysters, harvested from the Long Island Sound. They tend to be strongly mineral, a touch iodine, and beautifully briny. As wild-grown oysters they mature slowly, taking three years to reach market size (three inches). They have the wild variability you might expect.
And yes, these oysters are, in fact, named after the famous Naked Cowboy who fiddles around in his underpants in Times Square. Oyster diver Chris Quartuccio wanted to give these delicious sea creatures a name that embodied boldness and passion. He felt the guitar-playing sensation was a perfect fit.
Naked Cowboys are just one of the many different featured Oysters during Riverstone Café’s month long “OystoberFest”, an annual event held every ‘Oystober’ to celebrate these tasty bivalves. Riverstone Café is featuring a unique, specially priced Oyster every day throughout all of October, though up to a dozen fresh Oysters are available for Chester County Oyster lovers daily all year long.
