PHILLY TO PITTSBURGH: IN FOR BREAKFAST, OUT AFTER DINNER
On Thursday, February 3, 2011, Mary Bigham of Dish Trip, in partnership with Southwest Airlines, will head to the city of steel, Pittsburgh for the third trip in a series of Dish Trips. Quite possibly the fastest trips ever taken in the name of food, DishTrip is a dining and travel adventure blog that sends local food ambassadors on whirlwind trips to their favorite cities to sample the best fare each destination has to offer in one day. These foodies taste the regional flavors, experience unique restaurants, get insider information from like-minded local food writers and live to “dish” about it.
“The concept of DishTrip is to give a culinary snapshot of a city, find the best places to eat and get to them in ONE actual day. We’re real foodies on a real budget—and that’s part of its charm,” explains Bigham.
“We’re thrilled to be partnered with Southwest Airlines on this project because many people travel for work or pleasure and have a limited amount of time to try the local flavors. Or, for the hard-core food-lovers, they need to be able to fly to their favorite foodie city and still have some money left over to sample the fare. With Southwest Airlines, that’s absolutely possible,” she continued.
The day’s trip features a number of local stops (each pre-approved by a city local). During tomorrow’s highly-anticipated southwestern Pennsylvania city visit, these Philadelphia foodies give a nice “thank you” to all of the people that helped make the trip possible, including Philly favorites like locally brewed beer (Victory Brewing Company, a brewery celebrating 15 years this month), Habbersett scrapple and Tastykakes.
During a Dish Trip, real-time updates include food-centric facts, photos and short video clips via multiple social media outlets so that social media users can come along for the ride. “By following along on our adventure, you can check out all of the great eats each city has to offer from home. Then, if you like what you see and want to try some the local flavor for yourself, you can very easily recreate our trip from beginning to end,” said Bigham. “Not only do we use Twitter and Facebook to post all the mouth-watering details, we also film the entire trip. So, even if you can’t tune in that day you will still have a chance to check out our DishTrip when we post the follow-up video on our website,” added Bigham.

But, what’s in store for tomorrow’s delicious journey in a city celebrating fries and slaw-topped sandwiches,Heinz Ketchup and one of the first true lager beers formulated in the United States? With the day’s itinerary laden with almost 10 tasty spots, the DishTrip entourage hints that stops may include some “religious” food experiences, mouth-watering sweet treats, and without a doubt, the classic Pittsburgh fare. Follow along all day to see this month’s DishTrip.com unravel, one bite at a time and find out what it is like to haunt around the home of the Steelers just a few days before they compete in the Super Bowl.
Dish Trip is a project cooked up by PA Eats, a network of hyper-local foodie websites providing locally-focused dining and lifestyle information. The inaugural Dish Trip sent our food trippers to visit Boston in August of 2010 and in November 2010, they headed to the second of the all-day tasting explorations, this time in Denver. Upcoming 2011 Dish Trips include one-day trips to Chicago, New York City and DishTrip goes international to Mexico in the spring!
