Our Recommendation: Troegs Dead Reckoning Porter

Where: Landmark Americana, 158 West Gay Street, West Chester, PA 19380

We recently dined at Landmark Americana, and I had a chance to check out their beer menu, which features a decent array of well-known domestics, imports and craft beers. I searched for a beer I’d not sampled before and my eyes fell onto a beer called Hop City Barking Squirrel. With no description as to what type of beer it was, I asked the waitress. She was unsure, but offered to bring me a sample. Barking Squirrel turns out to be a lager, and while it wasn’t bad, I was hoping for something richer on this fall evening.

That’s when I saw Dead Reckoning by Troegs Craft Brewery in Hershey, PA. This autumn seasonal porter has been making the rounds at a few beer festivals, but I had not had a chance to taste it — and I love porters. Dead Reckoning is available this season in 1/2 kegs and twelve-ounce bottles.

Troegs describes Dead Reckoning as “unfiltered and aggressively hopped for the style.” I found it to be a dark, rich porter, with a first taste that revealed cocoa and caramel. The pour did not have much of a head, and the porter was not very carbonated, which provides a desirable smoothness. I really enjoyed this porter, perfect for dark and chilly October nights. Dead Reckoning comes in at 5.8% ABV.

Troegs Craft Brewery was founded by two brothers, John and Chris Trogner, and is now located in Hershey, PA. You can take tours of their brewery, which provides an interesting adult-themed adventure in Chocolate Town, USA!
