Save the date this Sunday for a special celebration. Schuylkill Canal Association‘s 30th Annual Canal Day is quickly approaching. The fun-filled event is set to unfold on June 24 at Lock 60 (St. Michael’s Park) in Mont Clare. Festivities commence at 9 am and keep on flowing until 4 pm so there is plenty of time to stop in throughout the day. A $5/person donation will be accepted upon entering the access road from St. Michael’s Park to Lock 60, children 12 and under are free.
This year, the entire day of fun activities will be dedicated to Denny Porrini, SCA’s dear friend and devoted volunteer who passed away in April. Denny was instrumental in developing the Schuylkill River Trail Run and played a huge part in creating the infamous National Canal Joust competition. In memory of Denny and all he has done for the Association, SCA will permanently include the Denny Porrini Memorial Run in conjunction with the Schuylkill River Trail Run on an annual basis.
Guests can look forward to the Trail Run, infamous Jousting Competition, and new events like a Doubles Competition for the Horseshoe Tournament, a 19th century traveling doctor show, Alex the Juggler and much more!
Music is always a big part of Canal Day and this year is no different. This year’s exciting line-up includes local musical talent such as Holt45 and ECHO! Returning performers will be Christine & Company and Monte Napoleon. Plus, new to the scene is Phoenixville’ Rock & Roll After School Super Group. You can check out the music line-up to be sure you don’t miss any of your favorite jams. Music will start at 11am and carry through the entire day!
There are many FREE children’s events for the young attendees so come on out and show your support of the Schuylkill Canal Association for its continued stewardship and preservation of the canal. If it’s not the inviting activities that get you there like the Flea Market and Craft show, then just come to enjoy the great company for a good cause!
