Undressing the Wedding Trend of Naked Cakes

Say what? A naked cake…what is the world coming to!

Since Hilary Duff’s wedding in 2010, there has been an increase in seeing cakes without their party clothes on. The celeb opted to go without in the icing department and has set a trend in motion. Hilz went with the icing-less look for a more “vintage home-made” look, and that it did. Accompanied with the fresh flowers the look was rustically chic.

The trend is currently booming in the wedding world. Brides are now choosing to go without the traditional buttercream icing or fondant. It is a common complaint among brides that they think the fondant is too thick, too chewy, too sweet, the list goes on. Even those who LIKE icing sometimes feel like the amount put on a wedding cake is a little overboard.

With the many tiers of a professional cake there is more than likely a substantial amount of icing between the layers, the rest is superfluous.

While right now the trend is primarily wedding focused, I think it’ll soon catch on and be popping up for other events and celebrations as well.

The naked cake look is definitely appealing and allows for so many creative options!

So as you plan your friend’s baby shower or throw your parent’s a 50th anniversary party, ask yourself the question… to ice or not to ice?

Lucky for locals, Chester County is booming with award-winning wedding cake bakers – those crafting Naked Cakes included. Consider Cakes and Candies by Maryellen, The Master’s BakerSaint Peter’s Bakery, Bella’s Desserts and Strawberry Bakery – to name a few.
