Chef Q&A: Samantha Castagnetti of The Italian Barrel of New Orleans

By Denise Gertsen

It was sheer luck that I learned about the charming little hidden gem called The Italian Barrel.

My husband was traveling alone in New Orleans on business, and as usual was looking for the “best chicken parm in town.” After logging on to OpenTable: New Orleans Restaurants, he found a WINNER!

Lucky enough to be visiting last week for Mardi Gras, he shared his ”little diamond” of a restaurant with me. After enjoying one of the best culinary experiences I have had in a long time, I knew I had to interview up and coming Chef/Proprietor Samantha Castagnetti. Lovingly known by her friends & clientele as The Lady of Verona, not only does she have a talent for cooking, but she has such a down to earth personality and fantastic laugh that automatically made me feel at home.

DishTrip: After living in Italy your entire life , what made you decide to open a restaurant in New Orleans?

Samantha: My grandmother has lived and owned a shop  in the French Quarter for over 40 years and my mother has called this her home for fifteen. After Hurricane Katrina I decided it was time to move to the United States to be with them.

What inspires you most about your menu?

The fact that I am fortunate enough to create it myself and that I use the freshest ingredients possible. We have weekly specials that eventually end up on our menu, due to their popularity. I also change the menu every few months so I can use produce that are in season.

After 4 years since the opening of The Italian Barrel, do you have a favorite menu item ?

My favorite menu item would have to be the  Porcini & Truffle Ravioli and my Osso Buco with polenta, which is only available on Friday & Saturday nights.

What is the one italian food that you could not live without?

In a word… PASTA!!!

Chef Castagnetti is hoping to expand the restaurant in the near future. This cozy little bistro houses an adorable tasting bar and only 7 tables in a romantic dining room. During the warmer weather you can also enjoy outside seating. Make sure that if you are lucky enough to visit The Italian Barrel , give yourself plenty of time to linger and enjoy their wonderful wine selection, many of which are available by the glass. They also serve wonderful imported cheese and salumis!

The Italian Barrel is located at 430 Barracks Street, New Orleans, LA 70116.
