Declare your independence from the crowds, stay close to home and have a fabulous Fourth along the Brandywine Valley Wine Trail! Wineries all along the trail will be offering a variety of wines, food, picnicking and music to celebrate the holiday weekend. No passports or tickets are required to attend these events—we’ve got all the juicy details:

Black Walnut Winery

3000 Lincoln Highway, Sadsburyville; (610) 857-5566

Black Walnut Winery will be treating visitors to a weekend filled with wine, BBQ and live music on its outdoor patio and horseshoes and bocce on the lawn. Saturday, July 6, enjoy a free afternoon concert with Bubblin’ Crude from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 7, brings another free afternoon concert, with Michael Kropp,  from 1 to 5 p.m.  Bring your own wine glass for these free outdoor concerts or purchase one of theirs. Pulled pork, ribs, chicken and sides will be available for purchase from Jimmy’s BBQ of Frazer on both days. Wine tastings will be $6/person to sample seven wines. Wines will also be available for purchase by the glass and by the bottle. Note: No other alcohol allowed on site.

Borderland Vineyard

Borderland Vineyard is postponing its pig roast to introduce Jamie Woolley, personal chef of Someone’s in the Kitchen. The theme of the weekend will be Something Old (charcoal grilling and s’mores), Something New (Jamie’s gourmet grilled fare—clams, sweet peppers stuffed with goat cheese and more) and Something Red, White and Blue (Borderland’s Preminee and Merlots, Chardonnays and Riesling-by-the-glass and the blue sky—fingers crossed!).  Saturday brings live music by the Bickel Brothers and Others. Vineyard tours will be conducted on request.  Look for the launch of Borderland’s new fleet of Adirondack chairs!

Chaddsford Winery

Celebrate the Fourth of July with a Brandywine Big Bang BBQ at Chaddsford Winery!  The winery will have live music all four days, BBQ food for purchase, wine tastings, wine by the glass and wine slushies. Best of all, there’s no admittance fee and no reservations required. Thursday, July 4, and Friday, July 5, food will be provided by Capt’n Dick’s BBQ. Saturday, July 6, and Sunday, July 7, dig into to BBQ by Sum Pig food truck. Musical lineup includes Larry Roney on July 4, from 1 to 4 p.m.. Geri Smith performs on July 5, from 2 to 6 p.m.. On July 6, Hake & Jarema play from noon to 3 p.m. and Drew Nielands performs from 3:30 to 6 p.m.. On Sunday, July 7, Mike Favinger kicks plays from noon to 3 p.m. and Josh Komorowski wraps up the weekend, performing 3:30 to 6 p.m. 

Kreutz Creek Vineyard

Saturday, July 6, and Sunday, July 7, celebrate the holiday at Kreutz Creek with the Italian Scallion Catering Truck and its delicious pulled pork and sandwiches. Cool down with everyone’s favorite, wine slushies!  Zazous will be playing Gypsy Jazz and Swing from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 6.

Paradocx Vineyard

Indulge in Happy Hour at the Vineyard from 6 to 8 p.m. on July 5 with $2 off selected wines by the glass (Whitewash, Barn Red, Pail Pink, Chardonnay, Cabernet and T wine). Enjoy live music, chocolate, and crackers available for purchase. A local restaurant menu will be available for dinner.

Penns Woods Winery

124 Beaver Valley Road, Chadds Ford; (610) 459-0808

Take part in Penns Woods’ Sangria Weekend with fresh-made Sangria, just $6 per glass. The winery will also have a free lawn concert by The Brandywine River Boys from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 6. Gourmet Cheese plates will be available all weekend.

Twin Brook Winery

Celebrate the holiday with fried foods paired with Twin Brook’s wine and free afternoon lawn concerts. The Octorara Football/ Softball Boosters will be on-site serving hamburgers, hot dogs and fried treats from noon to 5 p.m. both days, or bring your own picnic. Live music on July 6 provided by Nicole Zell Band from 1 to 4 p.m. July 7 brings Ragtime Willi and Funky Folk to the winery from 1 p.m. 4 p.m.
