He’s not aware of this, but George Bieber is one of the main reasons you can call me a foodie. When I first visited his brick & mortar restaurant Shorty’s Sunflower Cafe over a decade ago, I discovered how creative, unique and fun food can be, and I’ve been going back as often as possible ever since.
His Pottstown restaurant is my go-to place for all of my brunch/lunch catch-ups with friends, and we don’t even look at the menu because we know it all by heart. The biggest decision is how to choose between the Flying Dutchman (tower of apple buttered-toast, scrapple, eggs and homefries), Sunflower Omelet (caramelized onions, bacon, cheddar and sour cream), an impossibly fluffy stack of pancakes or one of the drool-worthy specials like veggie enchiladas with black forbidden rice. They’re all our favorites, but we never skip a side order of zucchini bread. And while George won’t divulge the secret recipe, I’m pretty sure it has something to do with butter.
Of course I was elated when I heard of his plans to go mobile and have enjoyed watching every step of the process since. The artwork that makes his restaurant decor so unique found its way onto the side of the truck, and soon they were spreading the sunshine not just around the suburbs but also on the Philly streets. Now, the yellow Sunflower Truck Stop mobile cafe is celebrating its first birthday and also receiving national recognition.
This week, George traveled to New York City and made sous chefs out of Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan, instructing them in the preparation of his deliciously simple Sweet Potato Quinoa Quesadilla (pictured below). If you didn’t catch the segment on TV this morning, go online to catch the video and vote. You need to be quick! Voting closes in just 48 hours. Help our local chef advance in the “Truckin’ Amazing Cook-Off,” and possibly win yourself a prize as well!
After you watch his official quesadilla how-to (and vote!), hit Phoenixville Farmers Market on Saturday morning, anytime between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. for an official taste-test.
