Project Weekend is a recurring how-to column that follows Dish writer Chelsea Sproul as she takes on DIY projects in her tiny kitchen.
Confession: I have a serious snacking habit. Because of that, it’s really important to me that what I’m grazing on is actually good for me. Granola fits the bill, but it can be expensive and sugar packed. By making it myself I can control price and ingredients!
For this extra-crunchy Project Weekend I made some super healthy and addictive granola. I have a real problem obeying recipes, so I love that making granola allowed me some additional freedom in choosing ingredients. The recipe I followed most closely can be found over at the kitchn, but I’ll walk through the alterations I made below.
My ingredients included plain rolled oats, flax seeds, sliced raw almonds, cocoa powder, salt, olive oil and maple syrup.
I used two pans to bake my granola with one mixture tightly packed into a cake pan and the other loosely spread onto a cookie sheet. I thought the granola in the tightly packed pan could be broken into bar-like chunks, but to get the granola out of the pan I had to break it apart. It was, however, much less prone to burning.
I absolutely love my homemade granola. The maple syrup and olive oil give it an earthy, salty taste that makes it impossible to stop eating. I would highly recommend getting creative with your ingredients and trying this simple project ASAP!
