Wake Up Call: Amani’s BYOB Excels at Inventive Weekend Brunch

It’s a cold, yet sunny December morning as we file into this charming local BYOB.  As we enter and begin to warm up, our palates are poised in anticipation for what brunch will bring.

Amani’s BYOB in Downingtown is celebrated by critics and foodies alike, and for good reason. Chef Jonathan Amann and his team serve up unique, clever, and beautifully plated food that is downright delicious. The restaurant’s focus on local and seasonal ingredients keeps the menu fresh and the ingredients even fresher.

When a high caliber restaurant like this offers brunch it is a true treat. Allowing diners to escape some of the fuss of dinner on a busy night, brunch is a luxuriously casual affair. The atmosphere of Amani’s is always inviting and warm, with a modern farmhouse appeal that is particularly charming as the late morning sun streams in through the spacious front windows. However, Amani’s serene ambiance is but a modest gesture towards the goodies waiting to come from the kitchen.

Brunch here is a special experience. Amani’s fabulous team whips up classics with interpretive twists, as well as inventive favorites, and plates them in a way that reminds you to slow down and savor. For some, smoked salmon is a quintessential brunch item, and Amani’s rendition presents the dish in a new light. Lavash crisps dish up smoked cream cheese and hot smoked salmon, which in turn are highlighted by crispy capers, pickled onion, and tomatoes.

Bloody Marys are another familiar at brunch. At Amani’s they’ve toyed with the conceptual flavor of the well-known cocktail, and delivered an intriguing crab cake dish. On the plate, jumbo lump crab cake is paired with Tabasco gel and a horseradish and tomato confit. An adornment of celery sliced paper thin and a shower of fresh microgreens complete this interesting play of flavors.

Whether it’s French toast, pancakes, or chicken and waffles, Amani’s presents them all with an authentic touch. The classic French toast is highlighted by a sweet-tart cranberry pecan compote and vanilla bourbon maple syrup. Pumpkin pancakes with cinnamon mascarpone showcase seasonal flare.

The smoked chicken and waffles is a hearty dish where delightfully airy waffles are smothered with a delectable smoked chicken gravy and accompanied by cheesy grits with millet. If you’re looking for a more savory option, the eggs Benedict and breakfast burrito are sure bets. In all cases Amani’s executes the classics beautifully, while adding a delightful twist that elevates these dishes and pays homage to the season.

If you still have room towards the end of brunch, the dessert menu is every bit as tantalizing as Amani’s other offerings. After all, brunch is about treating yourself, right? Don’t miss the dark chocolate tart with its rich filling and crunchy pretzel crust.

This lovely spot in the heart of Downingtown is sure to please with its amazing food, stellar staff, and warm atmosphere. There’s no doubt that Amani’s is a local landmark for great farm to table cuisine, and it may just be the best brunch spot around.
