Grand Opening: Burlap and Bean Roast House in Media

Coffee, donuts and yoga—what better way to spend a spring Sunday?

The quickly developing West End in Media welcomes Burlap and Bean Roast House. Nestled at the point where State St. and Baltimore Ave. meet, the new hotspot for java is officially opening its garage doors this Sunday.

Join owners Brent and Tara Endicott and creative director Anna Miron during the Grand Opening celebration April 30 from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Sip the delectable drinks, delve into the delicious donuts and take a moment to say “namaste.”

This is the second Burlap and Bean location for the Endicotts. The first opened in 2006 in Newtown Square and has become a go-to coffee house and roastery. The Endicotts are undoubtedly passionate about their products and strive to create the best coffees, teas and innovative small plates.

Of course, it all starts with the coffee.

The duo seeks out the finest, freshest beans from around the world. They roast 100% Fair Trade Certified and Organic Certified coffee right on-site. Brent and Tara are committed to ensuring their products are traded responsibly, which marries perfectly with Media Borough’s mission as “America’s First Fair Trade Town.” Fair Trade means fair pay for farmers and workers.

“There was a cycle of poverty in the coffee industry for quite a while,” says Tara. “I couldn’t stand contributing to that, so we were 100% Fair Trade from day one. I care about you and sleep better knowing that I’m helping the overall community.”

The community has certainly embraced the Burlap and Bean brand. Not only do they brew for individual customers, but they also provide wholesale beans for businesses across the region, including Whole Foods, Swarthmore Co-op and cafes at Delaware County Community College.

Burlap and Bean offers familiar drip coffee, espresso and cappuccino, but you’ll also find a wide selection of specialty drinks. The Cafe Miel is a warm espresso drink featuring steamed milk and raw honey, locally sourced from Sweet Melissa’s honey. Many of Burlap and Bean’s added flavors are house-made, including the raw almond milk, vanilla and caramel.

“We’re excited to have Nitro Cold Brew, which is new for us at this location,” Tara says.

Think silky, smooth and right from the tap. Also on the menu is small-batch kombucha. The fizzy fermented tea beverage is created by Inspired Brews Fermentary in Old City Philadelphia. Taste a free sample while supplies last at the grand opening!

Pair your favorite drink with one of the signature toasts. That’s right. Toast. Created using artisan bread by Baker Street Bread Co. in Philly, “Burlap and Bean will offer six standard toasts and one seasonal toast option, including ricotta, hummus, avocado and pesto prosciutto made right here,” says Miron.

They’ll also feature locally based baked goods, including renowned Firehouse Donuts, the sweet and savory confections popular throughout the Philly area.

The Burlap and Bean experience is enhanced by the cool, casual, industrial vibe.

Anna Miron, a Delco native, once worked at the Newtown Square Burlap & Bean, and went on to pursue a Master of Architecture from University of Oregon. She and her husband moved back East, and the Endicotts offered her the opportunity of a lifetime—her first solo project and 100% creative design freedom. The challenge: transforming a former automobile garage into a casually chic coffee house. Marty’s Exxon closed up shop and handed over the keys.

“I love this space. I wanted to preserve the integrity of what was here,” says Miron. “The garage doors are still operational. I wanted to add interesting lighting, plain lines and give it an industrial look. My goal was to bring the style I developed while in the Pacific Northwest and infuse it into my hometown.”

Take a look around and you’ll find reclaimed and repurposed items everywhere.

“The wood comes from Philadelphia Woodcraft Company. The tables are actually reclaimed wood from old row homes in the city,” says Brent.

The planters are the old barrels from the auto shop, as are the bolt heads used in the espresso machines.

“I always wanted to live in a garage,” says Miron. “Everybody thought I was nuts, so this is a dream for me.”

Tara can’t agree more.

“It’s amazing. We still can’t believe it’s real,” she laughs. “It’s serendipitous.”

Meet Brent, Tara and Anna this Sunday. The festivities begin at 10 a.m. with free pop-up yoga, free drip coffee all day, free kombucha samplings, live music, the toast menu debut and the Firehouse donut truck.
