Coffee fans have a brand new place to hang out on Main Street in Manayunk—Pilgrim Roasters. The cafe and roastery opened in late June, serving hot and iced specialty coffee and teas. The vibe at Pilgrim is minimalist; owners Dan Faehl and Ryan Connelly have chosen not to offer any flavor syrups, preferring instead to extract the inherent flavor notes of their beans through espresso, batch brew, pour over and other manual brewing methods. The food offerings are minimal as well, with pastries from Narberth-based Au Fournil and yogurt and granola parfaits made with Seven Stars organic yogurt and Lenka granola.
When asked why Faehl and Connelly decided to bring their coffee vision specifically to Manayunk, Faehl replied, “Manayunk is an upcoming area where people appreciate good food and beverages, and there didn’t really seem to be any businesses doing quite what we’re doing. Center City, South Philly, and Fishtown seem to have plenty of specialty coffee shops popping up, but Manayunk seemed to be lacking one.” How has the neighborhood responded to their Third Wave coffee ways? “People have been very receptive so far!” Connelly said.
Pilgrim Roasters hope to meet more neighbors at its official grand opening celebration is scheduled for Friday, July 14. The shop will stay open later (until 8 p.m. instead of their usual 6 p.m.), with free Federal Donuts in the morning until they’re gone, and a family-friendly hangout from 6–8 p.m. with complimentary pretzels and pizza. Swing by for a cup of Pilgrim Roasters’ Colombian drip coffee, a creamy cappuccino or soothing tea and officially welcome them to the neighborhood.
