PA Eats’ Instagram Live: DECA City Farms & Backyard Farming Co-op (Tues., July 21, at 4 p.m. ET)

We have really been looking forward to this week’s Instagram Live conversation; we’ll be meeting Hawa Lassanah, founder of DECA City Farms in Lancaster, PA. Hawa’s ambitious life mission has been to “gain a wide breadth of education, knowledge, and experience about the world and its innovations in order to share it with her community.” She’s accomplished, first with the creation of the brand Discerning Eye Foundation for the Arts and Education, and then the Discerning Eye Center for the Arts. She’s also entered the wellness realm with Yoga For All donation-based yoga classes. Discerning Eye Community Agriculture is the latest manifestation of her mission, and it acts as an umbrella organization for various projects, including the Backyard Farming Co-op. This co-op came together at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic as a community-focused way to empower local gardeners and provide food security through the action of neighbors feeding neighbors.

There is so much more to the story, and we can’t wait to chat with Hawa to learn about her vision for food justice in Lancaster city, how people can get involved with Backyard Farming Co-op, and about what else this dynamic organization has in store for the coming years!
