Sunday Funday, Roadtrip Edition: OCMD

By Sarah Alderman

Chester County has got so much offer year round, but sometimes a gal’s got to pack her car and hit the road! This weekend, let’s head south to the other OC, Ocean City, Maryland. Not just for Senior Week or Cruisin Week, there’s plenty to do here that will keep your whole posse entertained and relaxed.

The Seacrets’ Out

OCMD’s worst kept secret is the little oasis of Jamaica, USA. Whether you spend the whole day here floating on a raft in the bay or you head over for dinner (get the crabcake sammie!!) and some dancing, this is the place for the 21+ crowd to unwind on the Strip. Their signature frozen drink, a Pain In The Ass, is sure to have you forgetting all the real-life PITAs from back home and feeling the sway of that live island music in your hips. The closest you can get to a tropical vacation in the Northeast. Just trust me, it’s the place to be! They also offer lodging with an on-site hotel…may be a good idea depending on how long overdue that vacation is!

Seacrets is located at 117 West 49th Street

Nom Nom Nom….Where To Get Your Eat On

Whether you’re a dead head, a night owl, a bit of a glutton, or even none of the above, you will LOVE Tubby’s! I’m not gonna lie, I’m pretty sure this place caters to the late night crowd, but that crowd has some good taste in beach food! I live for their banana milkshakes, brownies, and all day breakfast. And I really mean all day—they close at 3 a.m. Did I mention the Pacman tables?

Tubby’s can be found on 59th Street, bro.

People seem to get really excited about eating mass quantities of food when they go away, so I feel compelled to recommend Embers. Note that I hate buffets and have never eaten there myself, but I CAN tell you it’s better than the buffet-on-the-boardwalk-which-shall-remain-nameless and comes highly recommended.

Ember’s is on Coastal Hwy at 24th St.

If it’s atmosphere you crave, try Hooper’s Crab House (12913 Ocean Gateway). Bring your eatin’ pants, because the food is phenomenal, the beer is cold, and the views are amazing! It’s definitely a spot you’ll have to drive to versus hoofin’ it, but it’s worth the damage to your carbon footprint.

And Now for Something Completely Different!

Not intimidated by the 3 hour drive? Well add 20 more to visit a place that’s truly unique, Assateague Island. By following Stephen Decatur Highway, you will cross the bay bridge onto this dazzling barrier island, home to tons of wild ponies. Watch them wade through the bay and graze or get out and take a stroll, maybe even get close enough to touch one! (Which I wouldn’t recommend because they’re wild and also it’s illegal I think.)  This is a great place to spend a romantic evening under the stars, Ray LaMontagne’s All the Wild Horses playing softly in the background. Sigh…Is it time to go back yet??

Safe Travels and Happy Summer!
