The Brandywine River Museum will offer free general admission on May 18 as part of Art Museum Day which coincides with International Museum Day. Participation by museums emphasizes the lasting impact art museums have on their communities, highlights the value of the visual arts in society, and provides opportunities for audiences to participate in the wide-ranging programs that art museums offer.
The mission of the Brandywine River Museum is to collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret for public benefit artistic and historical objects with primary emphasis on the art of the Brandywine region, American illustration and still life painting. Among the artists represented are Howard Pyle, N. C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, and Jamie Wyeth. There is work by hundreds of famous illustrators. The exhibition Barry Moser: Bookwright, on view through May 22, features extraordinary engravings and watercolors by the award-winning artist and book designer.
International Museum Day is organized annually around the world by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). Art Museum Day is an opportunity to focus attention on the role of art museums in North America, as part of ICOM’s global celebration of museums.
“Art Museum Day is an opportunity to celebrate the collective memory of human creativity, both past and present, that art museums hold in the public trust,” said Kaywin Feldman, President of the Association of Art Museum Directors and Director and President of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. “AAMD believes that art should be accessible and relevant to all, and we are so pleased that the Brandywine River Museum is joining with us and the global community of museums to create new opportunities for audiences to engage with museum collections and programs.”
The Brandywine River Museum is located on U.S. Route 1 in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. The museum is open daily, except Christmas Day, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Regular admission is $10 for adults; $6 for seniors, students and children ages 6 to 12; and free for members and children under six.
