In June 2008, the Farren family was looking forward to school ending and a summer of fun beginning until Delaney, a normal happy 3-year-old little girl, started having excessive unexplainable bruising. Thanks to the quick actions of Delaney’s pediatrician, she was sent to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and was diagnosed with Leukemia on June 19, 2008.

Over the next 13 months, Delaney experienced countless chemotherapy treatments, hospitalizations and side effects, including loss of hair twice and loss of appetite—which resulted in a feeding tube for 8 months. She also experienced many rare side effects such as aphasia, which is the temporary lack of ability to speak and understand, and a clot in her liver, which nearly ended her life in February 2009. Because of the amazing doctors and nurses at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Delaney was able to conquer every challenge that came her way. Although losing a year of childhood innocence, Delaney has managed to keep a beautiful smile on her face and teach many people life’s true lessons.

Unfortunately, after two and half years of chemotherapy treatments, Delaney relapsed in her right eye. Due to this relapse, she had to endure 8 days of radiation to her eyes, and is currently undergoing a more intense round of treatment for relapse in the Central Nervous System.

These intense treatments are robbing her of more of her childhood, but she is able to go to kindergarten and dance class on her better days. Although this treatment plan is much more intense, Delaney continues to smile!

Also, in addition to the upcoming fundraiser, the 3rd Annual Laneybug 5K will take place on May 30 in West Chester. Find more details by clicking here.
