Philly Beer Week Preview: Five Outside the Box Events

This is the fourth installment of our Philly Beer Week Preview Series. Click here to read the first regarding Tap Takeovers, here for the second regarding featured Homebrew Events, and here for the third regarding the top Prix Fixe Dinners.

And now it’s time for something completely different.  There are plenty of run-of-the-mill beer events during Beer Week.  Tap takeovers, beer dinners, tours, firkins, rare beers, all that kind of thing, but why don’t we try to check out something different?  Have some fun! Live a little!  Beer Week is all about enjoying yourself.  While I’m sure you’ll have no problem enjoying yourself at, for instance, 15 taps of Founder’s, here are a few other things you can check out that are a little more outside the box.

TOP FIVE OUTSIDE THE BOX EVENTS

Throwdown in Franklintown Round 2 at Kite and Key

Saturday, June 4 | 2:00pm – 6:00pm
Everyone loves to hang out and talk beer with their favorite brewers and beer reps, but what everyone loves more is watching them beat the crap out of each other with giant boxing gloves. The night will feature a “Brothers in Brewing” match-up of Steve & Doug Mashington from Yards and Paul & Andrew Rutherford from Iron Hill and Yards, respectively, with guest referee Casey Hughes of Flying Fish.  There will also be a “Ladies of Craft Beer” match pitting Suze Woods of Sly Fox against Wendy Domurat of Dogfish Head, refereed by Megan Maguire of Ommegang.  Rounding out the card will be Kite & Key owner Jim Kirk vs. Tom Kehoe of Yards. Expect other shenanigans throughout the night as well, as this one will be one to remember.

Dogfish Head Takeover and Moustache Contest at Resurrection Ale House

Monday, June 6 | 2:00pm – 6:00pm
Resurrection will be partying in true turn-of-the-century style, sporting a Victrola DJ along with 13 taps of Dogfish Head.  The real draw, however, will be the moustache contest, judged by Dogfish Head’s own “moustache department.”  Come for the great beer and hopefully win a prize at this 1900s-style moustache bash.

Prism Pool Tournament at Perch Pub

Saturday, June 11 | 6:00pm – 10:30pm
Prism head brewer Rob DeMaria and Team Prism will take on all challengers in an eight-ball style bracket tournament.  There is room for 10 two-player teams, and the winners of the tournament—if they beat Team Prism—will win great Prism prizes, including a free happy hour at Prism’s new tap room.  Sign-up for the tournament is from 6:00-6:30, so be sure to get there early and bring your game face.  Prism beers will be featured at the bar throughout the tournament.

PBC Fried Chicken Run at South Philadelphia Tap Room

Saturday, June 11 | 4:00pm – 8:00pm
Ever wanted to eat fried chicken, grab a beer, and go for a run? If so, you better get training because that’s exactly what this event is about. For $25 (which gets you fried chicken, three Philly Brewing Co. beers, and a t-shirt), you can join the Fishtown Beer Runners as they go from PBC to SPTR. The run will start at 4pm, and you can register by stopping by SPTR or calling 215.271.7787. If you’re not a runner, you can still take advantage of the party at SPTR: $8 will get you fried chicken and the PBC beer of your choice.

Ride the Rails with Boxcar Brewing Co.

Friday, June 10 | 7:00pm – 11:00pm
For $40 (or $35 if tickets are purchased at the brewery), you can hop on the old-fashioned West Chester Railroad with Boxcar Brewing to take a trip to Glen Mills picnic grove, where food, beverages and entertainment will be provided.  This should be an unforgettable event with a little bit of everything.  Thought it may sound child-friendly, keep in mind that you must be 21 to partake in the event.
