Coming Soon: Yori’s Church Street Bakery

We were excited to see a small sign noting a new shop, Yori’s Church Street Bakery, coming soon to downtown West Chester! We tracked down owner and baker David Yori to learn about the sweet and decadent designs he has in store for the borough.

David explained he will be creating a full-line of baked goods including danishes, donuts, cinnamon buns, pies, French pastries, assorted cookies and cookies by the pound, cream puffs, and a variety of cakes including red velvet cakes, carrot cakes, graduation cakes and wedding cakes. The bakery will have three tables and also three stools and a tabletop facing the window so diners can look out onto the street. They plan on selling coffee, and eventually will add refrigerated cases for drinks and milk.

“Baking is a dying art,” David told me. “It’s hard work and a lot of kids aren’t going into this type of work. All our baking will be done on the premises. It’s going to be fresh made every day.”

David first learned baking as a teenager while working at Weinrich’s Bakery in Newtown Square. He worked there while attending West Chester University. Upon graduating in 2009, he continued on at Weinrich’s part-time, as well as baking for two other Delaware County establishments, Jacquette’s Bakery and Original Bagel, both in Broomall. After working at these three shops, his boss at Jacquette’s helped David draft a business plan to open his own bakery. When David came upon the site on Church Street, he knew this was the space for him.

David has been busy the past few weeks, making his final equipment orders and laying out the store design. He will be hiring soon. He’s looking for friendly folks who can wait on customers and restock supply cases. If you are interested in learning more, email David at [email protected].

Yori’s Church Street Bakery will be located at 15 North Church Street, West Chester, which is the block between Gay Street and Market Street.
