SilverwareBy now, New Year’s resolutions about eating healthier have fallen by the wayside. But, not to worry. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics brings us National Nutrition Month each March to help us get back on track. Read on for nutritious tidbits, news on a West Chester restaurant with healthier cuisine and a chance to win your way to a delicious cooking class with a local chef. Yum!

Build a balanced meal. Take time during Nutrition Month to consider healthier options when preparing your favorite foods, the Academy’s theme this year. Whether your hectic schedule or your family’s culture is to blame for your less-than-ideal eating habits, embrace the foods you find yourself gravitating toward. Most foods can be part of a healthful lifestyle with a few adjustments. Learn how to make the most nutritious choices you can while enjoying the foods you love.

Kim Knipe, Coordinator for Community Nutrition and Outreach at The Chester County Hospital, understands the importance of savoring the foods you love. “Prepare your favorite foods without a lot of extra fat, salt and sugar,” Kim notes. “By adding plenty of fruits and vegetables to every meal and choosing low calorie beverages most often, you can enjoy a variety of foods while staying healthy.”

Enjoy a lighter fare for your night on the town. When someone mentions having a dinner out, my mind races to not-so-healthy choices and huge portions. For a night out that’s just right, try Doc Magrogan’s in downtown West Chester for their new lighter and healthier menu. They’re embracing fresh cuisine with entrées like California Style Mahi Tacos and Simply Grilled Atlantic Salmon. You’ll be enjoying light, healthy meals that will leave you simply satisfied with this newly launched menu.

Looking for more tips when dining out? Start your meal with a veggie-filled salad or choose veggies as a side. Many restaurants offer steamed or grilled options as healthier choices than the fried versions. The goal is to ramp up veggie intake and slash the big main portions. To cut down on those gigantic servings, here are a few tips:

  • Order an appetizer as your meal instead of a larger main dish.
  • Share a hefty entrée with a friend.
  • Ask for a to-go container right away—stash half for tomorrow’s lunch.
  • Don’t feel the need to “clean your plate.” When you’re satisfied, paws off the extra fries!
